Outreach
At University Circle United Methodist Church, we are constantly finding ways to become involved in the life and growth of Greater Cleveland – to use our skills, talents and resources to help improve the lives of those who make this changing city their home.
These are just some of the avenues open to you to use your abilities and caring spirit to help others:
WILLSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Volunteer Tutoring and Assistance Program – There are several opportunities for our friends and members to support this neighborhood school which is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. In addition to volunteers helping their assigned teacher help students in several subjects, the Outreach Committee also sponsors three special events: school supply and clothing contributions at the beginning of the school year, a New Book for Every Child in December, and Read Across America in March. You can be part of this important effort by contacting Mary Soirefman, Elaine Myers or Della Magee.
Located a little more than a mile from our church, Willson provides a continuum of services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Its learning environment includes interpreters and co-teaching classrooms where these students are educated along with general education students. All students are exposed to American Sign Language, and classes are offered to students, teachers, parents, and the community.
Feeding The Growing Need - The Outreach Committee of Church in the Circle sponsors an ongoing, congregation-wide project serving our neighborhood. Our church collects non-perishable food items to be taken to the Cory United Methodist Church food pantry, which is a distribution center for The Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland, serving the Glenville neighborhood where Cory UMC is located. Our goal is for the members of our church family to add ONE item to their grocery lists every week and bring it to church on Sunday to place in the collection bin in the Narthex. A grocery list of needs from the Hunger Network is available in the church office, in the Narthex and HERE on the website. This project is under the leadership of Sally Harper, who always appreciates volunteers willing to help with transporting the food to Cory.
